First Home Buyer Series: Interest Stage

Video Transcript

Erica Sachse

So, how did you guys get interested in entering the property market?

Andrew

Look, we, we always wanted to get into the property market. It was something that we thought was a smart decision, get your foot in the door, it’s an investment, prices around are going up and we’re only being forced to move further and further away from Melbourne because we couldn’t afford to, to live closer.

Ashlea

Yeah, we lived together, we moved in together really quickly in the relationship so like we, we were renting for about six months onwards so we knew we could live together and we knew we wanted to move on from renting cause it’s obviously, it’s dead money and we wanted to get involved in something of our own.

Erica

How long were you renting for before you bought?

Ashlea

I think four and a half years. Yeah, before we bought.

Erica

And what triggered you guys to decide to build new or kind of find land?

Andrew

We had a few friends that were, were in the building process and they had already bought land and that was sort of the area we wanted to look at as well but yeah it was a good opportunity to build the house we wanted to build and live in a place we wanted to live in so.

Ashlea

My biggest wake up call is yeah was going to see my childhood house which was- my parents sold about a decade beforehand so the people were reselling that bought it and we went and had a look at the open house and it ends up selling for like, over seven hundred thousand dollars and it was the smallest house and it was so tiny in this tiny piece of land, it was like one bathroom and I was like, I don’t want to spend that much money on something that’s so little and you know. If we have to move out and build to get something that we want-

Andrew

Our house at the moment is bigger than her childhood home

Ashlea

Yeah, easily. Our backyards bigger than our childhood home. <laughs>

Erica

And so how did you guys go out the process of starting to look for land? Did you look for a land or the house first?

Ashlea

Land first.

Andrew

Yeah, we sort of had a good idea because Doreen was such a popular area from where we came from. Everyone seemed to be moving out that way so there was a lot of, lot of land for sale out there and we had friends out there and that really sort of –

Ashlea

Sold it.

Andrew

Cemented, cemented the decision

Andrew

And we sort of just locked it in.

Ashlea

And when I found out that how much they were spending on a brand new house so I was like, wait so I can have that for seven hundred thousand or I can have a brand new place. We’re just like-

Andrew

For almost half the cost.

Ashlea

Yeah, half the cost, literally half the cost, we were like absolutely, and it just meant we didn’t have to like look around and compromise for houses and like if we look for something we loved and we got outbid or something like that, I think I’ll be heartbroken whereas this way we got everything we wanted and it was within our price range. It just seemed perfect.
